What is Snowy 2.0?

Snowy 2.0 is a pumped hydro project in the Snowy Mountains that will increase Snowy Hydro's generation capacity by up to 2000 megawatts, and at full capacity, will provide approximately 350,000 megawatt hours of energy storage.

As the economy decarbonises and baseload coal-fired power stations retire, more intermittent generation (such as wind and solar) will enter the market. This creates the need for new sources of quick, dispatchable energy generation such as pumped hydro, as well as the need for large-scale storage.

The Snowy 2.0 project involves linking two existing reservoirs, Tantangara and Talbingo, through underground tunnels and establishing an underground power station with pumping capabilities. Read more about Snowy 2.0 on the Snowy Hydro website.
